Gansbaai Communal Sports Day

Approximately 350 children attended the first holiday programme of 2010 at the sport centre. The programme was hosted by Overstrand Municipality and Football Foundation of South Africa.

International volunteers and the sport centre coaches entertained the children with rugby, cricket, netball, hockey and soccer clinics. Fun activities were also incorporated to promote fitness and active lifestyles.

The programme created interest in Boland Rugby and the Department of Education. Representatives from these organisations paid a visit to the sport centre and were duly impressed with the quality of activities and the amount of children who participated. Kobus Mike, the School Enrichment Coordinator of the Overberg Education District had the following comment: “Thank you for what I experienced as a very successful recreational and uplifting exercise hosted yesterday in Gansbaai. Be sure that the good work and effort that you've put in will not go unnoticed and will be reflected favourably in my report to the Overberg Education District Management.”

On Wednesday, TAG rugby and Ryan Maron’s Cricket School of Excellence hosted free clinics for the aspiring TAG rugby and cricket players in the group. These activities were filmed by Supersport and will be aired on Let’s Play shortly! We were very fortunate to meet former Springbok players and Rugby Legends Nelie Smith (1963-1965) and Tjol Lategan (1949-1953) as well as. Dave Macdonald What an amazing experience to see that sport can make you a star forever!

Our sincere thanks to ABSA Corporate and Social Investment for the sponsorship, Kathryn Johnson of Mosaic Farm in Stanford, Airline Ambassadors, Grass Roots Soccer and all the volunteers who helped make this programme the biggest so far! A special thanks to Van Blommenstein who surprised everybody with boerewors rolls on Thursday!
